Although different types and grades of paint often exhibit different qualities as you apply them and after they are dry, all paints generally contain four ingredients.

Pigments provide color and helps hide the surface underneath (prime pigments). Extender pigments increase the bulk of the mix without increasing the cost. For white paint, titanium dioxide (TiO2) is the most common prime pigment. It provides exceptional whiteness and hiding power and exhibits a greater tendency toward chalking in exterior paints. Organic color pigments include the brighter colors. Inorganic color pigments such as red iron oxide, brown oxide, ochers, and umbers, are not as bright as organic colors but are the most durable exterior pigments. Some commonly used extender pigments are clay, which provides hiding and stain resistance, silica and silicates, which increase scrub and abrasion resistance and control sheen, and zinc oxide, which increases resistance to mildew, corrosion, and staining.

Binders hold the particles of pigment together and creates the integral film that adheres to a properly prepared surface. Oil-base binders can be organic oils such as linseed oil (squeezed from flax seed and refined), tung oil (from fruit of the chinawood tree), and soya oil (from soybeans), or modified oils called alkyds. Alkyds dry harder and faster than organic oils. Some coatings, chiefly exterior primers, combine oils and alkyds for increased flexibility. The term “oil-base” is commonly used to refer to both oil and alkyd coatings. The binder in latex-base paint is a plastic-like, milky-white liquid dispersed as microscopic particles in water. It is reminiscent of (but not related to) natural latex from the rubber tree. Pigment and binder are called the solids of the paint. They remain on the surface when the solvent evaporates.

Solvents (also called the carrier or vehicle) make up the liquid constituent of the paint. The liquid carries the pigment and binder and makes it possible to flow them onto the surface being painted. As the liquid evaporates, the binders and pigments coalesce into a continuous protective film. Water is the solvent for latex paints. For most oil-base and alkyd paints, the solvent is a petroleum distillate. Shellac-base primers and varnishes use denatured alcohol as a solvent. Clear and pigmented lacquers use another petrochemical product, usually lacquer thinner.

Additives are ingredients that bring specific properties to the paint, such as mildew resistance, reduced foaming, good flow, and even leveling. Thickeners control viscosity and how well the paint flows when applied. They reduce paint spattering when you use a roller to apply it. Surfactants stabilize the paint so it will not separate or become too thick to use. They also help wet the surface being painted so the paint won’t crawl (move about) when it is applied. Biocides keep bacteria from growing in the paint, and mildewcides discourage mildew from growing on the paint after it has been applied. Defoamers break bubbles as they are formed in the paint — especially important when rolling paint. Cosolvents are liquids additional to water that aid the binder in forming a good film, help the liquid paint resist damage if frozen, and enhance brushing properties, including flow and open time (the time the paint can be applied and worked before it sets). Cosolvents are generally volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are increasingly subject to controls today.

Read the Label

The label tells the tale. Look at the label on the paint can carefully and you’ll find a wealth of information — some of which can affect your decision about whether to buy it or not. Labels will vary in content from manufacturer to manufacturer, but most provide advice on what surfaces the paint is designed for, how to prepare the surface, how to apply the paint, and an estimate of how much area the contents of the can will cover. Some labels will also provide supplementary information, such as thinning proportions for use in spray equipment. “Warnings” or “cautions” contain information about health and safety issues associated with use of the paint. Consult your South Shore painting contractor if you have any doubts about which paints are best suited and safest for each painting project.

Watching Paint Dry

If you really could watch what happens as latex paint dries, you’d see the gradual formation of a tough film. In freshly applied paint, the particles of pigment and binder are dispersed widely in the liquid. The film starts to form when the water begins to evaporate. During this process, the particles of pigment and binder come closer together. As the last molecules of liquid evaporate, capillary action draws the binder particles together with great force, causing them to fuse with the pigment into a continuous film.

In accomplishing a South Shore house painting task, to choose the right colors can be really tedious and daunting all at the same time. The exterior paint of your house would generally depend on the colors of the immediate environment that surrounds it. But of course, you can still choose the colors that you personally prefer for as long as they are elegant and appropriate.

Nevertheless, the only secret in Reno house painting if you are really unsure of what colors to choose, you can always settle for the classic white. This is considered as the universal color to be used for house painting. For the interior paint colors, the choice of hues would go different as well.

A lot really get stressed when choosing for the right interior paint colors. To make the task less troubling, you can pick a certain household item like a pillow, a bed cover, a window curtain and others. Look carefully at its color and think for yourself if you want your room to have the same color of some of these. You can also just choose a darker or a lighter shade of the color of these items.

There are lots of websites that you can visit who you can run to for some assistance. Most of these companies who offer house painting services render a virtual fan deck of colors to give you a more clear idea of your final color choice. Once you are settled with a particular color, it is recommended that you directly to the store and see an actual color sample card.

These sample cards measure to about 12 inches. You can put it close to your wall and compare it with the rest of the items to make a greater sense of the color. For exterior paints, you should always consider purchasing the top of the line paint. Remember that your rooms won’t be exposed to external factors that might easily cause damage to the paint.

Satin can be a best choice if you are after durability. With regards to South Shore exterior paint, you should make sure that you get what you paid for. If you are still unsure and you feel that you are running out of time, you can seek the guidance of expert paint retailers and the actual house painters. With their experience in the field, you can be sure that they can give you South Shore house painting advices that are truly reliable.

When deciding on whether or not to hire a South Shore Painter there are several things to keep in mind. At the top of the list is the fact that a licensed house painting contractor has two things many homeowners do not; experience and expertise.

Painting and decorating projects require specialized skills. One good reason why persons pay for the services of a professional painting contractor when it comes to painting the interior or exterior of their home. Time restraints, convenience, safety, and health are among other considerations.

Safety and Health Comes First
Climbing on ladders and painting can be hazardous work; so is working with solvents and dust inhalation. Professional contractors are “safety conscious,” and experienced to handle these situations. Home owners who opt to do the painting themselves risk unnecessary injury.

Houses built before 1978 may have been painted with lead-based paint, proven to pose serious health risks when scraped and sanded in preparation for repainting. Dust and paint chips from lead-based paint are a health threat to exposed individuals; working around lead-based paint, therefore, represents another safety hazard.

A licensed, professional contractor painting commercial or residential buildings that have lead-based paint have been trained to take precautions to protect you and your family from these health risks. They are also trained to protect themselves and their employees.

Quality Work Guaranteed
Finally, a house painting contractor will prepare surfaces properly for painting. Poorly prepared surfaces affect the appearance and quality of the new paint. To properly prepare surfaces for repainting is time consuming, but yields great end results, and increases durability of newly painted surfaces.

A qualified painting contractor is also familiar with the different types of paints, when to use what product, and how to apply each.

When you are painting your home, regardless if it is the interior or exterior, you are going to need a good South Shore painting contractor. Your painting contractor is the person who is in charge of the entire project and who will make sure that everything gets done on time and on budget. Without this very important and skilled worker you could find that things get way out of hand.

You need to choose the right painting company in South Shore for the job and in order to do that you need to know what you should be on the lookout for. The first thing that you need to do is talk to the contractor in order to see how they listen. Is this contractor good at listening or does he or she simply talk over you and try to push you to thinking their way? You want to work with someone that will do their best to get your vision working. This is your home and your painting project needs to be something that you can live with in the end.

The next thing that you need to do is get some references. Get at least 5 references from each of the painting contractors that you are considering hiring. Then make the calls and see what these clients have to say. Ask specific questions as well as what they liked and did not like about the painting contractor. Some people don’t like saying bad things about people, so you may need to phrase things a little different. For example, ask what they would have changed about the contractor if they could have. This will usually get a pretty good response. These answers are going to help you to choose the Brentwood painting contractor that is right for you’re and your home.
