Let’s be honest, painting is much more involved a project than it appears. Paint commercials like to show smiling couples spending their Saturday morning happily painting their interior walls, yet they leave out the important parts – like prepping the space. The truth is that even when it comes to painting the inside of your South Shore home, this is simply a task best left to the professionals.
The work is much more tedious, and even dangerous, than advertising, home improvement blogs or articles tend to admit. So before rolling up your sleeves and deciding that you are going to try to save a few dollars by painting your home, think again.
Gaining More Insight to What’s Involved
The bottom line is that painting is about more then easily rolling on paint to the walls of your home, especially when it comes to the exterior, and when it comes to a home that has multiple levels. Before committing to the do-it-yourself approach, here are a few things that should help you make the right choice:
Inside or out, the biggest part of the job is prepping your walls. For the exterior, it is about making any needed repairs before applying paint. Knocking down hornets’ nests, replacing missing caulking and filling nail holes are a few of the examples of the work that is required.
Don’t forget getting a good pressure washing – another job best left to the industry experts. This rids your surfaces of stuck on dirt, dust and other debris that could interfere with the paint’s ability to adhere to the surface of your exterior.
Although the interior generally requires more taping, you are still going to have to tape off details of the outside of your home that should not get painted, at least not the same color as the main base paint. Also like indoor paint projects, you need to use a drop cloth and cover aspects of your property and landscaping, including shrubbery.
For multi-level homes, houses with vaulted ceilings, or other unique features that add height, you need at least a ladder but at best a scaffolding. Yet, this is what can add a level of potential threat to your DIY job that should act as a reminder that this is best left to a pro. Once you have completed the base color, then you have the trim to worry about. This can be tedious and time consuming, and must be carried out with meticulous precision.
